I just returned from a brief but rejuvenating stay at home in Morocco, where I dug up some more of my grand parents' old pictures. I immortalize one of them here...
There is something magical about old pictures. Especially black & white pictures. Feelings of nostalgia come to the fore... a moment that once was but now gone.
Though at first glance it seemed like a picture from an even earlier era in the fifties or forties, this particular moment was shot in the city of Rabat, in 1975 - I know because my grand father had the excellent habit of marking the back of each photograph with a date.
The dame with groovy vintage sunglasses on her head in the center is none other than my grandma - a radiant smile adorns her face.
My mother told me the picture was taken during an aunt's daughter's birthday. The ladies standing and smiling are uncles' wives and my mother's cousin - incredible that I hardly recognized them in their early years until after I was told who they were now.
I love how the dress style in the photograph is an accurate reflection of a cultural metissage that is still alive in Morocco...the lady on whom my grandma is leaning in the center is wearing a djellaba - a long loose-fitting robe with sleeves and a hood - while the others are wearing European dresses. The two styles co-exist in perfect harmony as they still do now around the country.
Another detail I appreciate is the glass Coca Cola and Fanta bottles - and I should add that these are still sold in some parts in Morocco, though much less than before.
So voila, a moment of vintage bliss to revive a time long gone.
